News from First Grade: September 21

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers you all sent my way this week - I am super blessed to have such an amazing class with such incredible parents!

We have an assembly tomorrow, so please make sure your kiddos get to school on time (or even a few minutes early) so they can drop their backpacks off before heading to the cafeteria.

September 29: Fall Picture Day (order forms were sent home with your child today)

Crazy Hair Day: We will be celebrating earning 750+ Class Dojo points tomorrow with Crazy Hair Day. We are also celebrating hitting the 1,000 Class Dojo point mark tomorrow with extra recess for the class.

News from First Grade: September 14

Dear Parents,

I can't believe we are wrapping up our 4th week of school! We had a busy week with beginning of the year literacy and numeracy assessments - it finally feels like we are starting to settle in to a normal schedule. 
A few important notices:
Mrs. G out on Monday: Your kiddo may have let you know, but my grandfather passed away this week, so I will be out on Monday. If you have any information that needs to get to the sub on Monday (change in transportation, etc), please either send a note with your child or call the office (since I won't be there to communicate via email).
Vision and Hearing Screening: We have our vision and hearing screening tomorrow (Friday). If your kiddo wears glasses, please make sure they bring them to school tomorrow.
Library: Tomorrow is library day for our class! Please make sure your child brings their library books to school so they can check out new ones.

News from First Grade: September 7

CRAZY SOCK DAY: Our class earned more than 500 Dojo points over the past 2.5 weeks! We will be celebrating with "crazy sock day" tomorrow (Friday 9/8). Students may wear wacky socks to school (if they want)!

LIBRARY BOOKS: Please remind your kiddos to bring his/her library books to class tomorrow. We have library in the morning. Students will not be permitted to check out new books if they still have some checked out. Thanks so much!

CLUB NIGHT: Club Night is scheduled during the PTA meeting tonight (September 7) that starts at 6 PM. More information about the teacher led clubs will be shared at that time. The sign up will open at 7:30 pm tonight and will close on Monday (9/11) at midnight. (I will be one of the 1st grade teachers leading the STEM Club for 1-2 graders. There will be 4 sessions offered that last 4 weeks each for 12 students a session.)

News from First Grade: Sept 1

We had a great second week of school! We are getting comfortable with classroom procedures and some awesome learning is happening!
Important Dates:
September 4: No School - Labor DaySeptember 7: School Club Night September 29: Fall Pictures

Our learning next week...
Math:  We will collect data and organize data in up to three categories.  Students will represent data using tally marks and T-charts .  We will also determine what kinds of things we can learn about the world around us by collecting data.

Science: Students will work to classify objects by observable properties such as larger and smaller, heavier and lighter, shape, color, and texture. Students will look at similarities and differences in objects based on their properties.

Reading: We will continue setting up the expectations for Reader’s Workshop.  Students will learn what a “just right book” is and how to “shop” for books in my classroom library.  We will discuss, and I will model, wha…

Hope everyone is staying safe and dry this weekend! We had an amazing first week of school and I am looking forward to an even better second week! Below are some important reminders and notices for the upcoming week.
**Due to uncertain weather conditions, school will start 2 hours late tomorrow (8/28). Doors will open for students at 9:10 am and school will begin at 9:40 am.**

First Day Update

We had such an amazing first day today! I have a class full of sweethearts! I am looking forward to an amazing year with these kiddos!
Daily Folders:green daily folder came home with your child tonight. This folder will go home every afternoon and should come back to school each morning. Inside this folder, you will find: Weekly Reflection sheet: each day, students will fill out something positive that happened that day and something they would like to change/make better for the next day. This will be a great conversation starter for you and your kiddos each day!Any papers for you to fill out or keep (this will take the place of "Thursday folders") In today's folder, there was a sheet to sign up for Class Dojo. This will be our classroom management and positive behavior reward system for the year. Signing up will allow you to see points that your child is getting for showing our Stallion expectations. Welcome to 1st Grade!

Welcome to 1st grade!  My name is Kaylyn Gustafson and I will be your child’s 1st grade teacher.  This will be a great year at Patsy Sommer and I am excited to be a part of all that your 1st grader will accomplish this year!  
I am looking forward to meeting you at Meet the Teacher/Supply Drop Off on Friday, August 18th in Room A110. Last names that begin with A-M will come between 3:30-5:30 P.M. and last names that begin with L-Z will come between 4:30-6:30 P.M. During that time, I will provide you with instructions on how to label your child’s supplies for the first day of school.
